As 2025 came to a close, industry analysts named the year’s sweeping US tariffs on vehicles and parts as the single most influential development affecting global automakers, alongside continued fallout from the rare earth magnet shortage.

Automakers spent much of the year adjusting production plans, renegotiating supply agreements and lobbying for carve-outs, while total tariff-related costs across the industry were estimated in the tens of billions of dollars.
