Rare Earth Magnet Shortage Threatens Global Vehicle Production

20 June 2025

Automakers around the world raised alarm over a growing shortage of rare earth magnets following new Chinese export restrictions, warning that the disruption could halt production of critical components used in steering systems, sensors, motors and safety systems.

Industry groups representing General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen warned US officials that plants could face shutdowns within weeks without consistent access to these materials. In Europe, several suppliers were forced to pause production lines as magnet stockpiles ran out.

AUSMAH sees this shortage as a reminder of how deeply automotive manufacturing now depends on complex global material supply chains, and continues to watch efforts to diversify sourcing away from single-country dependence.
