China Accelerates Strategic Crude Reserve Buildout Amid Global Supply Uncertainty

14 February 2026
China is moving forward with plans to expand its strategic petroleum reserve capacity by an additional 180 to 190 million barrels, with analysts estimating the country will add roughly 1.0 million barrels per day of crude to its reserves over the course of 2026.
The buildout follows earlier directives to state-owned firms to secure crude at favorable prices for long-term storage, with deliveries continuing into the year. Industry observers see the move as part of a broader strategy to strengthen energy security and hedge against geopolitical supply risk, while also taking advantage of discounted crude available from several producing nations.
